Parties are a great way to celebrate special events, meet new people, and bond with family and friends. It’s an opportunity to begin new friendships, feel that extra love from people close to our hearts, and have fun simultaneously.
No matter the culture, race, or age, people generally like to party. Very few would choose to say ‘No’ to good food, rich music, and delightful activities shared with people you know and care for. It is also an opportunity to make memories and capture special moments with pictures. For most of us, a party is a special event that is hard to pass up.
How to Spruce Up an Event
An age-old social exercise, traditional parties, can feel a bit dull and ordinary. Here’s a list of eight fun things to do at your party to make it more enjoyable.
1. Choose a Fun Theme.
For kiddie parties, blockbuster movies are in. Harry Potter offers magical ideas to do at the party. Prepare iconic robes of the different houses for the kids. Think of games that involve riding on a broomstick, catching the snitch, and waving a wand.
For adults, decade themes never get old. Choose a decade. People will dig it whether it’s the ’60s, ’80s, or the ’90s. Tell your friends to dress up according to that era. Do a little research and create a playlist of hit songs from the period. Hold a dance party using the decade’s iconic moves. For example, if it’s the ’60s, introduce “The Twist” to everyone!
2. Add Challenging Games.
Nowadays, people expect to play even a very simple game at a party. It can be a raffle, a dance-off, or an easy guessing game about the celebrant. Why not level it up and challenge your guests’ wits?
Invite your guests to form teams and play an exciting trivia game. If you have a close group of friends over, include inside jokes in the list of questions. The prize for the winning team does not have to be prestigious. It can be something simple but useful. Or it can just be bragging rights.
Prepare a scavenger or treasure hunt. If your participants are people who thrive in competition, you can try to play The Amazing Race. Set up clues in your home, or cover the entire neighborhood. Break off into pairs or teams. The one who solves the problems and collects all the items first wins. It will surely be memorable.
3. Classics Can Still Be Fun.
If your group loves board games, then playing some is a good idea. Prepare Life, Sorry! or Monopoly. It would be entertaining to see who remembers the rules. Keep the competition light but keep an eye out for the cheaters!

Charades is another game that is loved by all. There’s something infinitely entertaining about watching close friends and loved ones silently act out famous people, iconic characters, and movies. When you create your list of words, ensure that everyone is familiar with them.
A picnic party is another classic that everyone enjoys. Set the party up for a fabulous weekend afternoon. Throw in the blankets and bring a basketful of goodies. If you have lawn games available, bring them along. Your guests of all ages will have tons of fun in the fresh-air setting of your event. Don’t forget to tell them to bring sunscreen.
4. Pretend to Be Somewhere Else.
Aim for something ambitious and set up a backyard carnival. Find ways to DIY street fair games. A pyramid of colorful empty cans and a tennis ball transforms into the milk bottle game. Set up a few hooks and rings to prepare the all-time favorite ring toss. Make tickets as invitations and prepare small tokens as prizes.
You may opt to turn your place into a casino for an older guest list. Get your deck of playing cards ready! You may DIY or hire professional dealers to play blackjack or roulette. Don’t forget to have Frank Sinatra tunes in the background while the games are rolling. If you pull off any of these two, your party will be one for the books.
5. Make Your Guests Contribute.
Encourage your guests to bring their signature dish. This idea is a level-up on the traditional potluck. It will be a feast of special and favorite meals. Get a list ahead of time. Fill in any gaps like drinks or dessert if nobody is making them.
Instead of food, another option would be drinks. Set up a bar that allows your guests to mix their beverages. Try to equip the bar with everything a mixologist would need. These are a cocktail shaker, fresh citrus, and glassware. This party is not for minors.
Instead of a booze party, you can throw an ice cream social for the kids. Ask them to bring a pint of ice cream. You will need to fill a table with different kinds of toppings. Also, have a stack of root beer available for those who would crave float.
6. Make Music the Centerpiece.
Music brings people together. You can have your guests sing, dance, or watch the performers at your event. Do karaoke or hold a dance-off party. You can rent a machine to sing songs in the comfort of your own home. Or prepare a stage where willing participants can compete in a dance showdown. It’s also a good idea to get a panel of judges and hand out awards at the night’s end.
7. Tap Into Your Inner Artist.
Get your easels ready and set up small canvases. Kids will need to wear an apron and a hand-washing station. Invite everyone to illustrate what they see as you place a simple subject in the middle of the room. It can be as simple as a bowl of fruit or a more elaborate collection of items.
8. Get a Photo Booth.
Probably the most important of all is capturing memories at your party. Yes, you can always use your own camera. But, admit it, a photo booth would be more fun, especially for your guests. Think about the creative and wacky poses they’d do as the camera counts down to zero… and click!
